A book, a roll of toilet paper, or even a human brain could be nothing more than cake on the inside and fondant on the outside, as some pastry artists have proven that they can make hyper-realistic cakes and deceive your eyes.Videos of these types of cakes have gone viral and leave us incredulous, plus now we doubt that what surrounds us is real, as the internet has already turned these artistic creations into a meme, of course.Although they seem to be from another world, these cakes are made like any other, with cake, a bit of frosting, and a lot of fondant. Fondant is a type of icing, like that used for cookies, and is commonly used to sculpt or decorate cakes, cupcakes, and other desserts. However, the texture of fondant is very different from most frostings, and it is what makes it unique. Also known as sugar paste, fondant is made of sugar, water, and corn syrup, mainly, but the fondant used for these cakes/pastry sculptures usually has added gelatin or glycerin.Image taken from Instagram, @redrosecake_tubageckil.Among the homemade ways to make fondant, there are formulas that include powdered sugar and marshmallows, but definitely, that type of fondant is not very useful for making realistic cakes. There are many famous chefs known for their realistic cakes, some of the most popular are Natalie Sideserf, Luke Vincentini, or Debbie Goard, whose videos and images of cakes shaped like objects such as coffee cups or animals like armadillos or dogs have made a lot of noise on social media.Image taken from Instagram, @lukevincentini.In addition to the memes, these cakes have also sparked a debate about fondant, as many people do not eat it or believe it is a terrible ingredient because it is made of sugar. What do you think of these cakes and fondant?
