As part of the activities of #KiwiTeCuida, biweekly discussions will be held on the benefits of following different dietary challenges, exemplified in the kitchen of Colibrí Jiménez. The talks are led by Shadia Asencio, editorial director of Kiwilimón, and the team of professional nutritionists who support the new section, where you will find all the recipes -with calorie and nutritional counts approved by the USDA-, tips, and advice to help you maintain a balanced lifestyle, in harmony and health, without sacrificing flavor or restricting your diet. For the first challenge, we present low-fat diet, which is one of the categories of Te Cuida. In the discussion, the importance of following this type of diet was emphasized, as “a correct balance of fat in our diet helps us maintain a healthy weight, avoid cardiovascular diseases, and ensure the proper functioning of fat-soluble vitamins such as A, E, and K,” stated nutritionist Mayte Martín del Campo.A fat-free diet is impossible and not recommended. The recommendation for a balanced diet implies consuming 25 to 30% fat. However, this fat should come from monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, such as those found in almonds or walnuts, or in fish like tuna, red snapper, or salmon. In this regard, Mayte recommends consuming limited amounts of saturated fats found in cream, bacon, processed meats, and strong cheeses. Remember that fat is the nutrient that provides us with the most energy, with a conversion where 1 g of fat has approximately 9 calories.
