Globally, the harmful effects on health of a diet high in sugar are well known; for example, there is a relationship between sugar consumption and diseases such as diabetes or damage to vital organs such as the heart, kidneys, and pancreas. Therefore, at #KiwiTeCuida we share recommendations for ingredients and dishes that help you keep blood sugar levels under control. The benefits of a sugar-free diet are numerous, as it reduces the risk of obesity and metabolic syndrome, decreases triglycerides in the blood, as well as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends not exceeding 25 grams of sugar. However, the issue is that at least 10 food groups ended up being rated as high in sugar (ice creams, cookies, breakfast cereals, cereal bars, cakes, pastries, desserts, chocolates, jams, other sweets, and candies).  This has resulted in an increase in diseases such as Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, Hypertension, and elevated triglycerides, which lead to overweight and obesity, metabolic syndrome, among many others. Therefore, a reduced-sugar diet leads us to a healthier life. In this biweekly challenge of #KiwiTeCuida, we present the benefits of a sugar-free diet, with recipes full of flavor but low in sugar like the stuffed zucchini with poblano strips and corn prepared by chef Colibrí Jiménez, and this Monday, May 24, we will hold a discussion with Jennifer Asencio, clinical nutritionist, diabetes specialist with over 20 years of experience, and Fernanda Balmaceda, deputy editor of Kiwilimón, so you can learn firsthand about all the benefits of starting a low-sugar diet. We look forward to seeing you this Monday, the 24th, at 6 PM, on the official Kiwilimón Instagram to answer all your questions!
