Right now, with the strong topic of nutrition, I was asked in a conversation: What vegetables do you put in the fridge and which ones don’t? What a strange question, but the truth is I learned to put in the fridge what I saw at home being refrigerated. Well, in this conversation, I realized that some things were totally wrong, and that by not being well-informed, I was only causing my vegetables to lose their nutritional properties. Here are the foods that we often refrigerate but shouldn't:Tomatoes: I didn’t know, but tomatoes love heat and generally perish with cold temperatures, so if you store them in the fridge, the only thing you will achieve is to decrease their flavor and consistency. It’s much better to keep them in an exterior drawer.Potatoes: Unlike tomatoes, potatoes prefer humidity but not cold. Ideally, store potatoes in a cardboard box or a paper bag. A paper bag is better because it won’t create moisture that can rot the potato. And why not in the fridge in the vegetable's humid drawer? The moisture and cold convert the starch in potatoes into sugar, altering their composition, flavor, and texture as well as how they will be cooked.Kiwilimon Tip: How to organize the inside of your refrigeratorOnions: I don’t know if it’s a habit to cut some vegetable or fruit and immediately put it in the fridge, but that’s not correct. Onions should not go in the fridge, but be careful with green onions and spring onions, which have a higher water content and are perfect for storing in the fridge.Avocados: Avocados do not ripen until they are cut from the tree, so if you bought a hard avocado, never put it in the refrigerator as you will interrupt its ripening process. A tip is that when you buy it, wrap it in newspaper and put it in the oven, so it ripens faster. But if your avocado is ripe and you want to slow down the ripening process, put it in the fridge.
