The reason why beer should be drunk from a glass (and never from the bottle)

Mexico is a beer country. On average, each Mexican consumes 60 liters of beer per year, making this alcoholic beverage the most consumed in our country. And they are doing it wrong. The beer should always be drunk from a glass. “It doesn't matter if it's a commercial or craft brand,” says Guillermo Ysusi, Beer Server of Cerveceros de México —an organization that groups the main producers of craft beer in the country—. The reason is simple. When pouring the drink into a glass, the beer begins to lose gas (carbon dioxide) and this is important for two reasons. The first: it avoids the feeling of bloating and heaviness that many people often associate with beer. In this way, Ysusi explained, the gas does not get trapped in the stomach. The second, equally important, is that as CO2 escapes, the aromas contained in the beer volatilize and allow you to better appreciate its organoleptic qualities. This would not be possible with bottled drinks where the gas is released through a small opening. To better perceive the aromas, it should be noted, allows identifying a defect in the beer, in its production or old and/or rancid ingredients. “There are undesirable aromas in beers, such as a pronounced buttery smell or a cheesy smell. Another one is a vinegary smell; in this case, you have to identify whether this is not a characteristic of a sour beer, which presents vinegar or sour aromas, or an infection in another style of beer,” said Guillermo Ysusi. If your beer also smells like cardboard, it may have already passed its prime. What is the ideal glass for each beer? Like with wines, the shape determines the qualities to be highlighted for each drink, which in turn has unique characteristics. Although there are many designs, these are the main ones: Mug Strong and durable, the mug is a staple among household dishes. This glass is ideal for lighter beers with a higher amount of gas as its wide mouth allows for its release. It also helps to preserve the ideal temperature of the drink for longer. Flute Glass Due to its shape, this glass allows the bubbles to rise constantly and for the gas to escape easily, which helps to perceive even the most subtle aromas in a beer. Therefore, it is recommended to use it when drinking light beers. As a bonus, it allows for a better appreciation of the liquid's tones. Pilsner Glass This glass allows for a better appreciation of the color and golden hues of the beer. Its slightly wider mouth aids in the volatilization of aromas and helps to preserve the foam for longer, preventing oxidation of the liquid. Its characteristics are similar to those of the glasses designed for wheat beers, especially German ones known as Weizen. Pint We are faced with the representative glass of English bars and pubs. The pint is generic. Its use does not present advantages for appreciating a beer, it just concentrates the aromas more. The plus is that it is easier to store, which is why bartenders and owners prefer it. Goblet Yes, beer is also drunk from goblets. This is the best option for drinking beers with more complex aromas and flavors, as well as with a higher alcohol content. Its shape concentrates the aromas in the medium mouth and, if necessary, it can be held with the palm of the hand to warm the liquid slightly, evaporating some of the alcohol content and allowing for a greater expression of aromas. Now that you know the best way to drink beer, will you do the same as always? View original article Article courtesy of:
