Flavor and a bit of zest is what salt adds to most cooking recipes. Salt is a very popular ingredient in the kitchen and, in small amounts, benefits the digestive process.
We explain the 10 different types of salt and their properties.
Maldon Salt
This type of English salt comes in crystal flakes, which is why it is sometimes referred to as flake salt. It is usually used in gourmet cooking and is an ideal seasoning for roasted meats, some appetizers, or, for example, recipes with mushrooms. It can also accompany grilled vegetable dishes.
It is recommended to use a small amount when cooking, as its flavor is strong.
Indian Black Salt
This type of salt is somewhat less refined. It comes from India and has a very strong flavor. It has a gray-pink color and less salting capacity than regular salt.
This ingredient is used in Indian cuisine, and some point to it as a good remedy for heartburn.
Celery Salt
This type of salt is characterized by being mixed with crushed celery seeds. It is commonly used to season soups, as a seasoning, as well as for pasta dishes and even some fruit cocktails. It is recommended to make the mixture of salt and celery just at the moment of serving, as otherwise, it may lose flavor and go rancid.
Oshima Island Blue
It is known for being expensive, for its ochre color, and for being from Japan. Its color is due to its formation process: vessels are placed in lagoons adjacent to the beach and filled with seawater. In summer, the water evaporates, and the salt remains in the vessels, taking on an ochre tone due to the color of the container in which it is formed.
Red Salt
It is found on Aloha Island, Hawaii, and is known for being one of the most expensive. This salt is mixed with clay, giving it a pinkish-red color. The grains are very fine, and the flavor has a slight nutty touch. It is used to season some meats and fish. It is also known as Red Alaea.
Fleur de Sel from Guérande
There are several types of fleur de sel; however, the fleur de sel from Guérande comes from the French coast and is a natural sea salt with no additives, sun-dried. Fine or coarse Guérande salt is used like regular salt, but fleur de sel from Guérande is used on salads or grilled meat and fish dishes, steamed vegetables, etc. Additionally, another peculiarity of this type of salt is that it is used to salt butter.
Himalayan Pink Salt
It is one of the salts attributed to many properties. It is obtained from the sedimentary geological layers of the Himalayas, its color is pink, and it has a rather bitter taste. It is a mineral salt that is usually used ground for cooking and as a seasoning for egg dishes. Among its properties, it is often noted for its effectiveness as one of the most popular natural antihistamines, helping to reduce muscle cramps and prevent the appearance of varicose veins in the legs.
Cypriot Black Salt
Cooking with salt allows for many possibilities and unleashes everyone's creativity. In gourmet cooking, Cypriot Black Salt is also highly valued, characterized by having pyramid-shaped crystals. Its texture is very crunchy, and its flavor is very fresh. It is used to season, for example, some seafood.
Halen Môn
It is a sea salt of Welsh origin. It has a crunchy texture and is spicy. It is often used on raw vegetables, salads, and also on grilled meats, game meat, and mushroom recipes.
