It is important to know the different types of onions that exist and that we can use in our recipes. Here is an interesting list:
- Yellow onions. They are a pale form of onions with yellow-brown skin and white, creamy flesh. They are the most popular for recipes. Their flavor ranges from very pungent to almost sweet, but they can withstand the long cooking times needed for soups and stews.
- White onions. They have white skin and flesh and are ideal for salads and stews.
- Brown onions. They have brown skin and beige flesh, and have a more intense flavor than white onions. Brown onions can be stored for a long time.
- Sweet onions. They have white skin and are generally larger and sometimes flatter than yellow onions. They are eaten raw in salads and are also good when grilled.
- Red onions. They are mild enough to be eaten raw in salads and sandwiches, but are often added to stews as well. Their flesh is reddish, and they are sometimes called salad onions. Red onions are pungent, with yellow or white skin, and have a milder flavor.
- Immature onions with a partially developed bulb. They can be sliced thin and served raw in salads or as a garnish for hot dishes. They are also good when cooked and are often added to stir-fries and other dishes.
