Lettuce, the new tortilla

The tortilla, a classic of Mexican cuisine, is reinvented to achieve the same flavor with fewer calories.
A freshly made tortilla is always tempting, there is no doubt about that. The problem is that excessive carbohydrate consumption does not help if the goal is to lose weight or stay in shape. This creates a problem when the quintessential street food in our country is the taco.
Many can argue that a taco without a tortilla is not a taco, but this nostalgia for corn does not have to dictate the taco consumption that one can have in daily life. In fact, if one thinks about it, the flavor and nutritional value of tacos come from within. The steak is full of protein, and the strips and mushrooms provide the body with plant nutrients. Similarly, tacos al pastor contain marinated pork in a sauce that is not particularly high in calories. Furthermore, the garnish of a good taco is usually vegetable-based, like onion, parsley, pineapple, and chili, ingredients that are beneficial for health.
Understanding it this way, a taco is not fattening because it is a taco, but because of the excess tortillas we consume. The alternative, then, to not lose the folklore of bringing this snack to the mouth by hand, is lettuce. Resilient, extremely low in calories, and fresh, it is a more than viable alternative when eating tacos. Renowned taco franchises like El Farolito and La Casa del Pastor have already realized this and offer their menu options in green leaves for those who want to eat lighter.
If you want to enjoy some delicious guilt-free tacos, here we leave you a homemade recipe that satisfies both those who enjoy the typical “garnacha” and those who long for that taste but prefer to watch their figure.
