Food is so ingrained in human life that there are even times when we turn it into art. This is the case of Lernert & Sander, two visual artists who have taken on the task of creating small cubes of common raw ingredients. The result is edible multicolor mosaics that can even hypnotize those who see them.
This gastronomic plastic work by
Lernert & Sander mixes diverse colors and textures that form very interesting cubist images. Among the cubed ingredients, we can find fruits, vegetables, and even some types of animal protein that create an appealing visual effect that you have hardly seen before.
Now, not all cubes are what they seem, and it can be challenging to guess which ingredient they came from. That’s why we were inspired by the multicolor cubes and created several combinations whose ingredients we invite you to guess. We will be releasing different photographs of the work throughout the month for you to participate in the dynamic.
This was our first choice:
Banana, sugar cane, avocado, mango, and coconut
If you decide to use these multicolor cubes in your kitchen, here’s how you can use them in the best way:
Banana
These whitish semi-yellow cubes are ideal for mixing with granola and yogurt to form a complete and very healthy breakfast. You can also fry them and use them as a variation of
patacones Cuban style for Caribbean dishes like rice and beans.
Avocado
The obvious option would be to use them to accompany
tacos, and quesadillas, which would give a gourmet touch to everyday Mexican snacks. The other alternative is to play with the cubes and make a cubed salad of avocado, beet cubes, nuts, honey, and feta cheese.
Coconut
The use of coconut can be very varied; it can even work as a sweet snack in itself. You can also add it to homemade ice cream for a crunchy touch, and it would even work inside a
piña colada, giving a fun texture to the classic cocktail.
Sugar Cane
Being so sweet, they can work perfectly to sweeten your
tea or coffee. Another idea is to put them in the freezer for a couple of hours and use them as sweet ice cubes in any cocktail or drink. Why not use them as a snack for kids as well, so they can get a lot of energy naturally for school.
Mango
The intensely yellow cubes work perfectly to decorate your
smoothie, and also for a fruit cocktail to which you can add strawberries and cherries. Another idea is to use them in a tres leches cake, which, when opened, would show the perfect little cubes inside.
