If one wants to maintain their weight and figure, then they should consider eating at home for most of their meals; there are compelling reasons to invest in better cooking rather than spending it at a restaurant.
You can eat everything, absolutely whatever you want without affecting your weight or health, as long as you cook it yourself at home. This is the statement of Michael Pollan, a renowned author of the famous book The Omnivore's Dilemma. He tells us that both fast food restaurants and many others in the industry specialize in cooking in a way that results in addictive products. Of course, they do not use that term, and refer to their products as craveable, but there is something hidden.
Pollan also asserts that through a lifetime of researching nutrition, he has discovered that, in reality, nutrients or even calories do not matter as much. What really matters is the way food is cooked. What leads to a healthy diet is the fact that the food is cooked by a human and not by machines or giant industries. Corporations cook very differently than we do at home; the ingredients they use most are sugar, fat, and salt. It is known that if you mix these products in the right amounts, you can achieve an addictive effect on the consumer.
The amount of salt, sugar, and fat used to create refrigerated foods or fast food is massive, far beyond the amounts we would use in our own kitchens. French fries, pastries, frozen pizzas, and other products are made based on these elements, and that is why they can taste so good and always be craveable, as it is in their nature to be addictive. These products are known to activate our dopamines, which are the substances that control our cravings.
The problem lies in the simplification. Nowadays, it is so easy to get processed fries and hamburgers that many times we don’t even consider making them at home; it would be unusual. It is much more normal and quicker to get this type of food at the nearest chain restaurant.
Does this mean that all restaurants are bad? No, recently there has been a movement of organic places that, in addition to cooking delicious food, ensure homemade preparations and natural ingredients. But, to control your diet and stay healthy, it is most advisable to eat at home, where you know where each product comes from and where you can prepare each dish to your liking and with awareness that will nourish you and your family.
