Eating at a restaurant is a true delight: we can indulge in a delicious meal without worrying about cooking, but often what we decide to order is not defined exclusively by our cravings.
It's clear that the experience of dining in a restaurant is very different from what we can have at home: the company, the ambiance, the variety of foods, etc. Thanks to a group of scientists from Cornell University who investigated consumption behaviors in restaurants, it was discovered that it is precisely these factors that determine our order (and not so much what we think we want to eat).
Discover which details of restaurants are influencing your decision:
1. The body mass index of your server
Although it may seem completely irrelevant, researchers found that the weight of the waiter can influence what you consume. According to a recent study, a diner is 4 times more likely to order dessert if the person serving them has a high BMI. It was even found that this also impacts beverage consumption, as people drank 17% more alcohol when their servers had a higher body mass.

2. The weight of the person you're dining with

3. The names of the dishes
The menu of a restaurant directly impacts our decision on what to eat, according to a study from the International Journal of Hospitality Management. The more descriptive the name of a dish, the more likely people are to order it and perceive it as more appetizing.

4. The ambiance
Restaurants with relaxed atmospheres make us feel calmer, making it easier for us to fully enjoy the dining experience. Take fast-food restaurants as an example: usually, people arrive, order their food quickly and simply, eat, and leave. This type of environment does not lend itself to lingering over dessert or enjoying food slowly.

5. The arrangement of the buffet
It has been found that people tend to eat more of the dishes that are presented at the beginning of the buffet line. It's that simple. Regardless of whether it's healthy food or more caloric, diners consume the first foods they find in the buffet.
