The hazelnut, also known as Córdoba hazelnut, is the nut-type fruit of the common hazel tree (Corylus avellana). Etymologically, it comes from the Latin nux abellana, dry fruit from Avella, a municipality in Italy's Campania region. It has a spheroidal shape, with a diameter of approximately 10 to 15 mm. It consists of a fibrous outer shell that surrounds a smooth coating in which the seed is housed. The fibrous shell dries during maturation.
It has a high nutritional value: 16% protein and 62% unsaturated oils. Additionally, it contains significant levels of thiamine, niacin, and high levels of calcium, phosphorus, and potassium. (
