The nutrition of children should be based on the principles of adult nutrition. Everyone requires the same types of nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, proteins, and fats.
The truth is that children need different amounts of calories in their daily diet than girls, and over time, this also changes as they develop. It is important to mention that these indices are based on a diet according to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans.
Everyone should be fed:
- Proteins. Choose proteins from this group such as fish and seafood, lean meat, eggs, beans, peas, soy products, and unsalted nuts and seeds.
- Fruits. Encourage the consumption of fresh fruits or freshly squeezed juice, do not opt for canned.
- Vegetables. Feed them a variety of fresh vegetables such as green, red, orange vegetables, beans, or peas.
- Grains. Choose whole grains, such as whole wheat bread, oats, quinoa, rice, etc.
- Dairy. Create the habit of drinking low-fat milk, whether just milk, yogurt, cheese, or fortified drinks.
Avoid allowing children to consume calories from foods like pizza, butter, cake, soda, sugars, etc. Instead, you can replace these with oils such as olive oil, nuts, avocado, and seafood.
