Fideo Gordo, the KiwiFav of the week

Fideo Gordo, a small corner located in Roma Norte, is a paradise for noodle lovers. The project is led by chef Eduardo Nakatani, one of the most recognized experts in Asian cuisine in Mexico, who is also the grandson of the migrant couple who invented Japanese peanuts. Less than two months after its opening, this new proposal has become a must-visit for foodies in the city, and here’s why! Endearing yet simple and unpretentious flavors, that’s how I would describe Fideo Gordo, as it perfectly combines the freshest noodles with high-quality ingredients. This place has a small but varied menu, so you’re sure to find something for every taste. To start, I recommend ordering the crudités with a creamy walnut and miso dip, the grilled shishitos with ginger dip, and the cucumber salad with pumpkin seeds and peanuts. Choosing a single noodle dish will be difficult, as they have 6 options. You cannot miss trying the lamb obi udon, which is prepared with lamb consomme, barbacoa, green chili, cilantro, onion, and a touch of lime juice. If you love meat, you also can’t miss the spicy X’ian style obi udon, which includes thick noodles, beef, spices, and its exquisite iki morita sauce, made with hibiscus and sesame. If seafood is your thing, Fideo Gordo has two wonderful options for you. You can choose between the tempura udon and the clam udon. The first is prepared with fish dashi, udon noodles, and giant tempura shrimp. The second option includes clams, wakame seaweed, and a touch of iki morita sauce. My two favorites were the vegetarian options, as the combination of flavors is harmonious and allows the fresh, high-quality ingredients to shine. You can’t miss trying the vegetable obi udon, delicious thick noodles with mushrooms, seaweed, bok choy, soy milk, and miso—this dish has a spicy touch that makes it irresistible! The second vegetarian option is the sesame noodles, which have a hint of scarlet mustard, radish, and shiso. The drink menu is small but well-stocked, as Fideo Gordo offers us teas, kombucha, beers, soda, and a wide variety of sake. To close your visit to Fideo Gordo on a high note, I recommend the green tea mushipan with a touch of sesame butter and the Herlinda charlotte, which is made with yuzu, though you can also order the ice cream of the day. Before visiting this new gastronomic proposal in Mexico City, remember that you will need to make a reservation. In addition to serving exquisite noodles with amazing combinations of flavors and fresh ingredients, the service is attentive and friendly, making it a must-visit place with your friends, partner, or family.
