Learn more about the story of this incredible chef. Alejandro Ruiz Olmedo is a chef who inherited rural knowledge from his past generations. He was born in 1970 in La Raya, Zimatlán, in Oaxaca, an agricultural town where most of the crops are reserved for self-consumption. From a young age, he learned the value of the land and helped every day in the family garden with basic farming tasks, such as watering, harvesting, and milking since dawn. As the oldest of his siblings, he always helped his mother in the kitchen to prepare meals using their own homegrown ingredients, depending on each harvest. This is how he developed a taste for traditional cooking, amidst the unmatched aromas, flavors, and textures of Oaxacan cuisine. Alejandro is a chef who has highlighted the authenticity of the flavors of Oaxaca and the endemic products from throughout the state, such as creole ingredients and insects. His proposal showcases the best of traditional recipes combined with select products in each of his dishes, such as deer, wild boar, lamb, duck, fish, or seafood. Alejandro Ruiz is considered the greatest ambassador of Oaxacan cuisine worldwide. In 1997, he created the gastronomic concept Casa Oaxaca, within a boutique hotel of the same name. In 2003, he opened Casa Oaxaca El Restaurante, and in 2006, Casa Oaxaca Reforma, recognized among the best in Mexico. He later opened Guzina Oaxaca in Polanco, Mexico City, Oaxacalifornia, south of the city of Oaxaca, and recently presented Portozuelo, the organic family garden from his hometown.In 2009, he created and led the first gastronomic and cultural festival El Saber del Sabor in Oaxaca, a celebration in coordination with traditional cooks, local chefs, producers, researchers, intellectuals, artists, and mezcal masters. In 2018, he published his first book, Alejandro Ruiz, Cocina de Oaxaca, which received the García Cubas Prize in 2018.Alejandro Ruiz is considered one of the figures who have transformed Mexico due to his outstanding career, but above all, because of the personality and passion that define him.
