When cooking, many people follow basic hygiene rules: washing hands, keeping the area clean, disinfecting fruits and vegetables, etc. But did you know that even by following these measures, your kitchen can still be contaminated?
Perhaps due to carelessness, you are making some mistake that can contaminate your food. Learn about the most common contamination hotspots in the kitchen and how you can easily solve them:
Cutting Board
This is one of the main places where food can become contaminated. Wooden boards are gentler on knives and affect their sharpness less, but they are also more prone to spreading certain bacteria. The best material for a cutting board is plastic. Ideally, you should have a board for each stage of cooking: cutting vegetables, cutting raw meat, cutting raw fish, cutting cooked meat, cutting cooked fish, etc.
Kitchen Towel
If you are obsessed with cleanliness, you probably wipe the kitchen towel over the table more than 5 times while preparing food. Although it may seem cleaner, you're likely just spreading more bacteria than removing them. Just like cutting boards, there should be towels for each type of cleaning: hands, drying dishes, raw foods, etc. Make sure to wash them frequently (ideally once every 24 hours).
Dishes
During food preparation, we often have to use plates to hold certain foods while doing other things. This point is basic since using the same bowl or plate to contain raw and cooked foods implies a guaranteed contamination of the food. Always use different plates for raw and cooked ingredients.
Scrub Sponge
The sponges and scrubbers we use to wash dishes can also contaminate the kitchen. To avoid spreading bacteria while washing the dishes, remove food residues from the scrubber and let it dry (never leave it in soapy water). Occasionally scrub the sponge with bleach or put it in the microwave for 30 seconds.
As you can see, ensuring the hygiene of your food is easier than it seems. Take care of your family's health by applying these simple tips in your kitchen.
