Surely, you had one of these in your childhood. Receiving a toy oven as a gift was almost like a ritual to transition from being a little kid to a not-so-little one. Ironically, one of its main attractions was the feeling of independence and the idea of mimicking adult behaviors. (Definitely, we didn't know what we were talking about. Who wouldn't wish to come home every day to a plate of hot food without having to spend hours preparing or washing dishes?). It doesn't matter if the toy oven sparked your true calling for food or the purest hatred for cooking, this toy is already a classic. Do you think you know everything about the toy oven? We can assure you that you didn't know these curiosities: The Easy-Bake Oven made its debut in the early 1960s, in 1963. Since its launch, more than 50 million ovens have been sold. In 2003, a gourmet recipe book inspired by this toy was written. The well-known chef Bobby Flay collaborated in this publication by creating and adjusting some recipes according to the specifications of the toy oven. In 2006, the toy oven was inducted into the Toy Hall of Fame. The principle of this toy (being able to bake easily) was made possible thanks to its incandescent bulbs that reached a temperature of up to 176°C. However, in 2007 the use of 100-watt bulbs was banned in the United States, so the mechanism of the oven had to be redesigned. Although the toy oven was long considered a girl's toy, in 2013 a 13-year-old girl convinced the company to include boys in the advertising and offer varieties of the oven in more neutral colors. Initially, the toy oven was designed to reinforce gender roles and maintain the idea of the traditional family. (Did we mention that this toy was launched in 1963?). However, the oven has adapted to the needs of its market and remains one of the favorites among children. Did you have a toy oven?
