100% natural granola, gluten-free muffins, organic fruits, does that sound familiar? In the face of increasingly industrialized products, a new generation of foods has emerged that promise to be a more beneficial option for health.
And while we all know they are healthier ingredients, it is not very clear what the differences and advantages of each one are. Discover what lies behind these labels and choose according to your needs.
What do food labels mean?
Organic
This may be the most popular category in recent years, however, it is not so simple to classify foods within it. For a product to be considered organic, it must be free of certain chemicals, but not just the food, also the soil in which it has been grown.
Note: it's not the same to buy cookies “made with organic products” as it is to buy “100% organic” ones.

Non-GMO
For a food to be considered non-genetically modified, the entire production chain must be completely free of genetically modified products. This means that if you are looking for meat with these characteristics, you need to consider everything from the parameters of the feed that the livestock was fed.

After reading this, you won't want to stop eating whole grains.
Added Sugar-Free
This is one of the most confusing terms, as a food may contain sugar but be free of added sugar. The difference between the two is that the first contains certain levels of sugar due to the natural characteristics of the ingredient – like fruit juices – and the second has had any type of sugar added during the production process.

Natural
Be careful when you see this label, as it is often one of the easiest ways to mislead consumers. If we start from the fact that all foods come from nature, all products are natural. Each company has its own definition of “100% natural”; before assuming anything, it's better to ask.

Additive-Free
While it is a term similar in ambiguity to natural, it is a bit easier to identify them. Products free of additives must be made from natural, not chemical ingredients. If you see that a label has chemical names, it is definitely a product with additives.
