Reusing plastic containers is not so advisable for these reasonsStoring beans in yogurt containers is so common in Mexico that there are countless memes and videos that perfectly capture the disappointment anyone can feel when taking one out of the refrigerator only to find them. But despite being a very popular practice, it is a fact that storing food in reused plastic containers is not recommended. The Federal Consumer Prosecutor's Office (Profeco) was the institution that alerted about this with an article titled “Packaging is not a container”, in which it states that “there are plastics that should not be reused to store food”. But this terrible news for our moms and grandmas has good reasons behind it.The first thing Profeco clarifies is that the container and the packaging of a product are different things. The former is the one that is in direct contact with the product; examples of these can be wine bottles, cream or yogurt containers, or cookie bags. Packaging, on the other hand, is the commercial presentation of the product, ensuring that it does not get damaged or come into contact with the outside. Why does Profeco say you should not store beans in yogurt containers? There are two basic reasons why it is not advisable to reuse cream containers to store food afterwards. The first is safety: since these types of containers are intended for single use, the material they are made of is not very durable and can easily deteriorate, crack, and break, which can lead to the entry of bacteria into your beans or any other food you store there. The second reason is that not all containers are safe for direct contact with food, and this depends on the type of plastic and the materials they are made of. There are 7 types of plastics, and those safe for food are those that have the symbol of a cup and a fork together, and can be of types 2, 4, and 5.Type 2 plastics are those used in dairy containers, but also in cosmetics and detergents. Type 4 plastics, made of low-density polyethylene, are used for garbage bags, food containers, and also for detergent containers. Lastly, type 5 plastics are polypropylene and are used in yogurt and deli containers.Using yogurt containers as Tupperware seems easy for everyone, and although Profeco points out these warnings, what you can do is reuse them but for a short time, as this will prevent them from deteriorating and putting the safety of your beans at risk.
