What will be eaten during the Paris Olympics?

The 2024 Paris Olympics are set to begin on July 26 and run until August 11. For 17 days, the best athletes from around the world will gather in the French capital to compete for Olympic gold and make history. The French have incredible dishes such as onion soup, coq au vin, beef Bourguignon, ratatouille, crème brûlée, and chocolate soufflé, among many other delights.  When we talk about French cuisine, we cannot forget their wines and cheeses, as they are among the best in the world. Additionally, bread deserves an honorable mention, as delights such as baguettes, chocolate croissants, and macarons were invented in this European country. This is why the stakes are so high when it comes to French food, as the chefs, products, and recipes are unparalleled. Regarding what athletes will eat during the Paris Olympics and Paralympics, the organizers explain that approximately 13 million meals will be served. It is worth mentioning that this not only includes athletes, as volunteers, press, and spectators will also be fed. Therefore, the Olympic Games will become the perfect platform to address issues such as caring for the environment, sustainable gastronomy, and climate change. Additionally, the goal is to create “more responsible eating habits in states and during sporting events.” On the other hand, very specific actions will be carried out to reduce environmental impact and raise awareness about healthy eating: Twice as much plant-based food will be served. This aims to generate less CO₂. The focus will be on local products, as 80% of the ingredients will be of French origin.  Efforts will be made to reduce the use of plastics.  Food waste will be limited. All equipment and infrastructure will be given a second life.  10% of the workers will come from professional integration programs. At kiwilimón, we applaud the effort that will be made to raise awareness about food, food waste, and the environment during such an important event.
