According to a report by Unilever, there are currently one billion adults worldwide who are overweight and 300 million cases of obesity; this figure is expected to rise to 1.5 billion by 2015.
We can all contribute to reducing this trend. The food service industry can achieve significant changes to offer healthier menus with small actions.
Our research shows that 66% of customers would choose a slightly healthier dish when dining out, looking for the following:
1. Lots of vegetables (34%)
2. Low in fat (32%)
3. Correct portion size (26%)
4. Grilled (22%)
5. Use of fresh ingredients (20%)
6. Low in calories (19%)
But they don’t always choose healthier options for the following reasons:
• Taste: Almost half (44%) of people agreed that healthy menu options generally do not sound very appealing.
• Cost: 57% of people agreed that healthy options tend to be more expensive.
• Satisfaction: Almost half (45%) of people think that healthy options do not fill them up enough.
