It's typical that we go out to a restaurant on the weekend and stuff ourselves with food, but to not feel so guilty, we order a light soda. I have to confess that I used to do that until I read an article that explains the truth about light sodas.
And it was to be expected…a soda that has no sugar or calories? It was too good to be true. Look at the results of a study conducted by the School of Medicine at the University of Texas, comparing a group that consumed diet soda with another that only drank regular soda over a span of 10 years:
-The waistlines of all participants increased.
-The bellies of those who only consumed diet soda saw an increase of over 70%.
-Individuals who only drank one or two cans of light soda a day had a waist circumference increase 5 times greater than those who only drank regular soda.
Can you imagine? They have absolutely nothing light about them, and as explained in the article, when we consume large amounts of fructose, artificial sweeteners, and polyols, we cause bacteria to adapt in a way that interferes with satiety signals in our metabolism.
These bacteria are responsible for processing food and, in doing so, emit a bio-product called short-chain fatty acids. This bio-product helps distribute energy in the body, but when the bacteria adapt to sugar and thrive, they become more efficient at processing large amounts of sugars and simultaneously increase their production of short-chain fatty acids.
It is these high levels of fatty acids that decrease satiety signals, as well as promote inflammation of the intestinal tissue.
This partially explains why researchers have found that diet soda may promote overweight. Calorie-free sweeteners can confuse the brain into wanting more sugar.
So now that you know the truth behind light sodas, when you choose to drink them, do so in moderation, and a very good tip is to drink plenty of water afterward.
