The goal of nutritional treatment is to reduce body weight, primarily the net weight of fats. This weight loss should be slow and gradual, based on modifying eating habits that contribute to obesity.
An adequate nutritional treatment aims for a 10% weight loss in approximately 6 months at a rate no greater than 2 kilograms per month. Very low-calorie diets may show faster results but have some side effects such as the onset of anemia, fatigue, cold intolerance, tiredness, cramps, headaches, hair loss, among others; moreover, they are completely contraindicated in patients with a history of recent myocardial infarction, pregnancy, cancer, other eating disorders, toxic dependence, and depression.
Habit modification is based on principles such as: distributing foods more frequently throughout the day to avoid long fasting periods; including foods from all groups in the diet, avoiding single-nutrient diets (which produce imbalances in the body as well as feelings of anxiety); avoiding energy-dense foods like aged cheeses, cold cuts, etc., and avoiding foods that create addiction such as chocolates, candies, and others.
