Do you think choosing a regular soda over a diet one is better? Most people think so, but if we are honest… deep down we know that everything that promises cannot be true: a fizzy drink, full of caffeine, that mysteriously has no sugar or calories. Too good to be true. Our friends from
ActitudFEM tell us the truth behind diet sodas.
In a study conducted by the School of Medicine at The University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio, a group drinking diet soda was compared to another group that only consumed regular soda. The study lasted nearly 10 years, and although the waistlines of all participants increased, the bellies of those who only drank diet soda saw an increase of more than 70%.
But the study was surprising when they looked at the figures of those who only consumed one or two cans of diet soda a day. The increase in their waist circumference was 5 times greater than that of people who only drank regular soda.
But what is behind diet soda? Why does it seem to cause more harm than its regular version? Here’s one of the most important reasons:
Impact on Gut Flora
When we consume large amounts of fructose, artificial sweeteners, and polyols, we cause bacteria to adapt in a way that interferes with the satiety signals in our metabolism.
These bacteria are responsible for processing food, and in doing so, they emit a byproduct called short-chain fatty acids. This byproduct helps distribute energy in the body, but when bacteria adapt to sugar and thrive, they become more efficient at processing large amounts of sugars while simultaneously increasing their production of short-chain fatty acids.
It is these high levels of fatty acids that decrease satiety signals, as well as promote inflammation of the intestinal tissue.
This partially explains why researchers have found that diet soda can promote overweight. Calorie-free sweeteners may confuse the brain into craving more sugar.
One option is to consume products containing these sweeteners in moderation and to drink plenty of water. To keep gut flora healthy, eat fruits and vegetables.
