Health: Prunes against bone loss

When searching for foods good for bones, we often don't think of prunes, but Dr. Bahram Arjmandi, a researcher at Florida State University in Tallahassee, points out that the Prunus domestica, the small oval plum that, when dried, becomes the prune, is the best fruit for strengthening the skeleton. In studies with animals, prunes not only prevented bone loss but also reversed it. According to a preliminary study in postmenopausal women, prunes could be equally beneficial for humans (a larger study is currently underway). What makes them special? They are rich in antioxidants that fight diseases, and they are an excellent source of boron, potassium, and vitamin K, which are essential for bone health. The women in the study ate eight to ten prunes a day, but Arjmandi thinks that three would be enough to see benefits. Buy them fresh, as this is when they are at their best. Throughout the year, look for them frozen, dried, or canned: eat them alone, with cereals or as snacks, or prepare them with onion, garlic, and carrot, and serve them with chicken or other meats.
