When it's time to think about back-to-school, we start considering what to give our children for snack time. Besides being nutritious and tasty, the lunchbox should have variety.
What you pack in your child's lunchbox will be their main source of food and energy for most of the day, so you should include foods that help them perform optimally at school; the combination of these foods is important for children to stay alert, energetic, and healthy.
That’s why we recommend some tips for your child's lunch this back-to-school season.
When preparing lunch, make sure to include fruits, whole grains, plain or flavored water without sugar, and limit sweets.
A different menu for each day; this way, children discover different flavors of food and don’t get bored. If you make sandwiches, use the delicious variety of whole grain breads available in the market (ciabatta, whole grain, loaf bread, bolillo, baguette, crackers, etc.). Give them a different fruit each day, change the flavor of the juice or water, and alternate the menus.
Make lunch fun; give them the opportunity to play. Children love to prepare their own food; set aside the dressing or dip for sliced raw vegetables, or let them make sandwiches with ham rolls and whole grain crackers, or they can dip fruit slices in yogurt, keeping them entertained while enjoying their meal.
Use fat-free milk and avoid putting cheese in sandwiches and tacos unless they are low-fat or fat-free.
Replace ham, turkey, or salami with low-fat deli meats or chicken breast.
Add vegetables to sandwiches. Lettuce, cucumbers, and tomatoes are good options.
Replace the flours in breads and tortillas with whole grain flours.
Include baked potatoes, pretzels, or whole grain cereals instead of potato chips. Limit the consumption of cookies and sweets.
Remember that natural juices should be 100% fruit juice and not 10 or 15 percent.
