The early periods of newborns are important regarding nutrition, as this will benefit or affect their development and growth. Therefore, it is essential to know what is good and what is not for the baby.
Breastfeeding
Breastfeeding is, or should be, the main source of food at this age, exclusive in the first months, since breast milk perfectly adapts to the nutritional needs and digestive characteristics of infants until the introduction of complementary feeding.
Complementary feeding: Beikost
Milk as the sole food after six months does not provide the energy and nutrients that the infant needs from this age, and moreover, as their digestive functions have matured, new foods should be included in their diet, following regulated guidelines. It is not justified to introduce new foods before three months, although it is also not advisable to do so beyond six, because lack of diversification is a common reason for loss of appetite, while wasting a very valid period for educating taste and knowledge of basic foods that will allow the baby to adapt to a balanced, varied, and sufficient diet.
One by one, the milk feedings that the infant receives should be gradually replaced with different components of complementary feeding (cereal porridge, fruit, vegetable puree), with sufficient intervals for the child to accept the new foods, testing their tolerance before introducing a new one and allowing time for their body to adapt. During this period, it is very important to allow the amount of food to vary from day to day and from week to week, depending on appetite.
