Eve O. Schaub took her family on a year-long challenge of not consuming sugar. The number of things they had to stop eating was astonishing, but the way it influenced their bodies a year later is even more incredible.
She thought she had a healthy life, believed it was normal not to have enough energy to get through the day, assuming she wasn’t the only one suffering from this problem. Information about the effects of sugar came her way, considering weight gain and diseases as a reflection of sugar consumption.
With this new information, she had the idea of spending an entire year without eating foods with refined sugar, added sweeteners, table sugar, honey, caramel, or fruit juice. They also stopped consuming any food that contained fake sugar or sugar alcohols. If the sweetness didn’t come from a natural source, they didn’t eat it.
By reading labels, they realized that sugar was in the most incredible places, like tortillas, chicken broth, dressings, mayonnaise, bacon, bread, and even baby food. Eve was convinced that their lives would be healthier, but she didn’t expect the improvement to be so real and tangible.
The longer the time passed, the more energy she had. They chose to eat a dessert with sugar once a month, but their palates changed, and they enjoyed the monthly dessert less and less. There came a point when the flavor was unpleasant to them and their bodies reacted to the intake of sugar with various discomforts.
After that year, Eve analyzed her children’s school absences due to illnesses, and the difference was dramatic. From having missed 15 days a year, they now only had two absences.
Their eating habits have changed drastically; they appreciate sugar in minimal amounts and avoid consuming it in their daily lives. Desserts are reserved for special occasions, and their bodies appreciate the change, as they are full of energy and are stronger and more protected against colds when flu season arrives.
When they do get sick, their recovery is much faster since their bodies are equipped for it. After a year without sugar, everyone feels healthier and stronger.
This adventure of Eve O. Schaub is an example of perseverance, as well as evidence that sugar can cause us much more harm than we realize.
