This June 14th is World Blood Donor Day. At Kiwilimón, we believe in sharing the table and life, which is why we invite you to join the Dona En Vida cause.Mexico ranks last in Latin America for voluntary blood donation with a rate of 3.1%. This results in the majority of transfusions being done through replacement donation, which has a higher infection rate (95-100%) such as HIV, hepatitis B and C, and Chagas disease, leading to higher health costs. Countries like Brazil, Costa Rica, Colombia, Cuba, or Nicaragua have high rates of altruistic donation, with percentages over 50%. These communities set an example for Latin America, considering that the shortage of blood in hospitals causes around 530,000 maternal deaths and 90% of fatalities due to car accidents in Mexico. That’s why at Kiwilimón, we support Únete Dona En Vida, a civil association aimed at promoting a culture of altruistic blood donation so that Mexicans donate blood regularly and voluntarily, with the following actions: connecting donors with patients; promoting the culture of donation; creating donation campaigns in companies, universities, and public places. Remember that when blood is donated, 450 ml is obtained, which is divided into 2 or 3 blood components. Thus, one bag of blood can save up to 3 lives, says Marisa Martínez, head of the Blood Bank of the Mexican Red Cross. Now more than ever, Mexico needs altruistic donors (during this health contingency, donations have decreased by 75 to 80%). Therefore, we invite you to follow the work of this association on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram, to donate your time as an ambassador or volunteer or with your financial contributions through their website. Join Dona En Vida, here, and make a difference!
