Year after year, the prestigious list known as The World’s 50 Best Restaurants is published, which awards the 50 best restaurants in the world, reflecting the culinary and cultural diversity that is gaining strength on both sides of the hemisphere. Since its inception, the list has reflected “the diversity of the global culinary landscape.”  Although many of the best restaurants in the world are located in Europe and Asia, the American continent is no exception, as proposals from Mexico, Peru, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, and Colombia stand out. This demonstrates that Latin flavors and endemic ingredients have finally received the recognition they deserve.  This time, we tell you about the best restaurant in North America, which is Mexican. In 2022, it achieved the rank of the 5th best restaurant in the world, as well as the best restaurant in the North American region.  Located in Mexico City, Pujol has dedicated itself to modernizing the flavors of Mexican cuisine for over 22 years, through its taco omakase and tasting menu. The omakase consists of a taco tasting, accompanied by wine and cocktails. It is worth mentioning that the menu is never the same, as the offerings change daily, although the tacos always include fresh, endemic, and high-quality ingredients. Meanwhile, the tasting menu includes the famous mole madre, which has been aged for around 2,500 days.  The Mexican restaurants that reached the top In addition to Pujol, there are other Mexican restaurants that also made it to The World’s 50 Best Restaurants list in 2022; here are the details. 1. Quintonil The Quintonil restaurant, located in Mexico City and led by chef Jorge Vallejo and Alejandra Flores, bases its menu on the reinterpretation of Mexican flavors and includes ingredients such as chapulines, Oaxacan herbs, quesillo, mole verde, huauzontles, adobos, moles, cacao, and more. Today, it is the 9th best restaurant in the world. 2. Alcalde Chef Francisco Ruano heads this restaurant located in Guadalajara. This year, it was ranked the 51st best restaurant in the world. Alcalde emphasizes local ingredients and offers tasting and à la carte menus. 3. Sud 777 This Mexican restaurant secured the 52nd spot on the list. According to its website, “it has been a turning point in the gastronomic offerings of southern Mexico City due to the culinary proposal of chef Edgar Núñez, who has positioned himself globally for his prodigious technique and his Mexican vegetable cuisine.” 4. Rosetta This year, the iconic restaurant earned the 60th spot on the prestigious list. Located in an old mansion, Rosetta is characterized by offering dishes that blend local ingredients with flavors from other latitudes. It offers dishes such as pastas, risotto, fish, lechón, tamales, and more. 5. Máximo Bistrot Another culinary gem from Mexico City joined the list at the 89th spot. Chef Eduardo García creates delicious dishes using Mexican ingredients and European techniques. Honorable mention Jorge VallejoChef Jorge Vallejo of Quintonil received the Estrella Damm Chefs’ Choice Award 2022. In addition to leading one of the best restaurants in Mexico and the world, the chef has also worked at Noma and Pujol. Santiago Lastra Mexican chef Santiago Lastra has taken the London scene by storm with his restaurant Kol, which secured the 73rd spot on the list. According to The World’s 50 Best website, Lastra “explores Mexican flavors with seasonal ingredients from all over England.” Cosme The restaurant Cosme, located in New York, was founded by Enrique Olvera and is currently led by chef Gustavo Garnica; it ranked 69th thanks to the Mexican chef and his entire team.
