Just a couple of days ago, rumors began to circulate that U.S. authorities were planning to ban the use of gas stoves due to their supposed negative effects on health. In Mexico, a similar measure is almost unthinkable, as a gas stove with burners is much more accessible than an electric one. We know that this topic is very concerning, as it is not only difficult to switch to an electric stove, but fire is a central element in Mexican cooking, being essential for making salsas, preparing mole, and even peeling poblano peppers. So, we set out to research gas stoves and whether they are harmful to health, take note! You can also read: How to clean an electric stove Are gas stoves harmful? A week ago, it was reported that the federal government of the United States was considering banning gas stoves, as research links their use to the development of asthma in children. It all started when Richard Trumka Jr., the commissioner of the Consumer Product Safety Commission, stated that natural gas stoves are a hidden danger in the home and that the federal agency was already considering their ban. However, he clarified that these types of appliances would not be removed from homes, but rather, they could no longer be produced. According to various international media, this commission has been analyzing the situation for months, as it is currently believed to generate pollutants that are related to asthma and the worsening of respiratory diseases. For its part, CNN reported that in December 2022, a scientific study was published that found that the use of gas stoves indoors is associated with a higher risk of asthma in children. Furthermore, the research indicates that “in the United States, 13% of childhood asthma cases can be attributed to gas stoves.” This same media outlet explains that “other studies have found that these stoves emit significant levels of nitrogen dioxide, carbon dioxide, and particulate matter, which could elevate indoor concentration levels to dangerous levels if there is inadequate ventilation.” You can also read: 8 foolproof tips to save gas in the kitchenIt is worth mentioning that although some cities have already banned gas stoves, the White House clarified that the current administration does not plan to ban natural gas stoves after the uproar caused by the news. So, while it seems that these types of appliances are harmful to health, more studies are still needed to determine how they affect health and the respiratory system. On the other hand, there is no better way to avoid their possible negative effects than to follow these 2 simple steps: 1. Make sure to ventilate your kitchen when cooking, so open the windows and doors. 2. If you have a range hood, use it! Many people have one but do not use it, but now you know that they can be a great tool to protect the health of the entire family. In the case of Mexico, we can only wait for the authorities to speak out about the safety of natural gas stoves or issue any alerts, so at kiwilimón we will keep an eye on this issue to keep you informed.
