It has always been said that fish and seafood are very healthy foods, however, there are certain details that must be considered before consuming them.
Are you a fan of seafood? You need to read this before eating fish again:
Tilapia
Due to its easy production, it is one of the most popular fish. But, even though it is economical and easy to obtain, tilapia is not exactly a healthy option, as it contains high levels of omega-6 fatty acids. So eating a dish with tilapia is almost as bad as consuming pork bacon.
Shrimp
Fresh shrimp are delicious, but unfortunately, only 10% of the shrimp we consume come from the sea. The rest are harvested from farms where shrimp are fed additives that can increase the risk of breast cancer or decrease sperm count in semen.
Swordfish
Although the taste of its meat is exquisite, swordfish is known for its high mercury levels. In fact, it is recommended that pregnant women and children refrain from consuming this type of fish.
Tuna
Tuna caught from the sea feeds on smaller species, which are generally contaminated with mercury. Like swordfish, it is advisable to avoid consuming tuna during pregnancy to prevent complications or malformations in the fetus.
Catfish
Recently, the consumption of catfish has become popular, mainly because it is very economical. But in this case, the problem is not mercury, but the quality of the meat. According to recent studies, it was found that most catfish are contaminated with bacteria that cause food poisoning.
Mackerel
It is important to mention that there are varieties of mackerel; it is not the same as Atlantic mackerel and Spanish mackerel. In general, all types of mackerel contain high levels of omega-3 fatty acids, but some, like Spanish mackerel, have a lot of mercury. The best option is the Atlantic variety.
Grouper
Grouper is on the list of fish with the highest mercury levels.
To avoid suffering from poisoning from this metal, those under 15 years old, pregnant women, breastfeeding women, or even those of childbearing age should avoid its consumption as much as possible.
For the rest of the population, it is suggested to limit its consumption to once a month at most.
