Do you remember the last time you experienced a vivid dream or a terrible nightmare? Now, do you recall what you had for dinner that night? New results from an extensive study say that both factors are closely related. Dr. Emmanuel Mignot, the director of sleep studies at Stanford University, explains it all.
The answer is not simple, but it is very interesting. Apparently, according to Dr. Mignot, certain proteins affect the brain chemicals from which dream activity derives; they can both heighten stress or the feeling of pleasure within them.
Spicy food, on the other hand, seems to also affect dream activity, but research on these specific ingredients is not yet complete. What seems certain is that chilies and similar items only affect certain types of people and not the entire population as proteins would. Spicy food raises your body temperature, which can cause you to sleep less deeply, resulting in more vivid dreams.
Now, is there a direct way to influence your dreams? The reality is no. Research is still ongoing, and no ingredient guarantees a specific outcome. What cannot be denied is the correlation between both, food and sleep. It seems that heavy food, which prevents you from sleeping well, can lead to vivid dreams since they are associated with light sleep. This is where the feeling of truly living the dream comes from.
