The gastronomy of Colombia is as vast and abundant as the riches of the country itself, whose soil is so fertile that everything consumed is grown within its territory, such as cassava (a tuber similar to sweet potato), yam (a plant very similar to potato), corn, and green plantains. If you are not yet familiar with the foods of the region, it is time for you to discover the most delicious typical food of Colombia. The typical dishes of Colombia are some of the most popular in the Latin American region thanks to the incredible combinations that can be made with their ingredients, plus they are dishes so abundant that they not only fill you with flavor, as you will see below. Arepa de huevo Arepas are a heritage from Venezuela from pre-Columbian times, but they have become a typical dish of Colombia, which you can find in different variations, fried or on a griddle, sweet or savory. One of the favorites is the arepa de huevo, which consists of a kind of fried corn dough tortilla that contains a raw egg inside, is sealed, and is fried again. Sancocho Sancocho is traditional food from Colombia's coastal region and is a rich soup with different types of meats such as beef, chicken, hen, and vegetables, spices, and seasonings to enhance the flavor. It's like chicken broth but revolutionized! Bandeja Paisa As mentioned earlier, bandeja paisa is one of the most complete dishes of typical Colombian food and includes up to 10 different dishes. In a bandeja paisa, we can find fried chicharrón, red beans, white rice, fried plantain slices, fried eggs, onion, tomato, an arepa, avocado, chorizo, morcilla (blood sausage), patacones (fried green plantain slices), ground meat, and ribs. Would you dare to eat a bandeja by yourself? Colombian Tamales Like Mexico, Colombia has its own tamales that people even use for family breakfast. The tamales are wrapped in banana leaves and are made from corn, filled with various legumes and meats. Would you try this typical dish from Colombia or stick with the Mexican version? Mondongo Mondongo is quite a controversial soup as it is made with offal, Colombian potatoes, and a huge amount of vegetables, many consider it somewhat heavy to eat in one sitting; however, it is always present on any Colombian menu. Stuffed Ripe Plantain Stuffed ripe plantain is one of the most common Colombian dishes for lunch, and that sweet touch is irresistible when filled with cream cheese, arequipe (similar to dulce de leche), and butter. Aguapanela with Cheese Finally, we present to you one of the most famous drinks in Colombia: aguapanela with cheese, a drink that can be served cold or as tea. Aguapanela is a product obtained from processing sugar cane and is generally consumed hot, accompanied by cheese to enhance its flavor. As you can see, the typical food of Colombia is vast and full of delicious flavors, so we would love to know which dish made you crave the most.
