Margaritas may be an international cocktail, but the tequila-based drink is of Mexican origin. Although different versions of its history have emerged, the common denominator in all of them is a woman as the protagonist: Marjorie, Daisy, Margaret, or Margarita. Some say it was invented in Ensenada and others in Jalisco, but this drink actually originated in the legendary Kentucky Bar in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, at the hands of Master Lorenzo Hernández. In other words, there are many versions and people who want to claim the creation of this famous cocktail, but only Ciudad Juárez can do so with printed evidence. The Best Margarita in the World 2021For a little over five years now, the dispute for the Best Margarita in the World has been held thanks to Tequila Patrón, and of course, Mexico is among the winners of two of the last three editions. For the 2021 edition, the competition will take place in the birthplace of margaritas, that is, in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, from February 22 to March 8, with the participation of 40 bartenders from 17 countries, and by March 9, we will know the name of the country and the city that will now hold the title of The Margarita 2021.This contest will be held through an online voting system, and Difford’s Guide, a reference in the global cocktail industry, will oversee the competition, which will also feature the esteemed mixologist Oscar Olvera, considered one of the best mixologists from Chihuahua, representing Mexico and Ciudad Juárez in this great international competition. For Olvera, this is “a great opportunity to show the world the great legacy that Ciudad Juárez has built in the history of cocktail making and to unequivocally prove that the margarita was born in Juárez.”On his part, Francisco Moreno Villafuerte, director of the Ah Chihuahua Tourist Promotion Trust, emphasizes that “iconic elements that confirm the foundation of the culture and identity of the destination, such as the Margarita, its history, and the anecdotes generated around it, contribute to travelers increasing their list of reasons to explore the vast territory of Mexico's great state: Chihuahua.”The version of the Margarita created by Olvera for this contest, called “Wake me up Margarita”, has been made possible through a regional effort in which different establishments will include Oscar Olvera's Margarita proposal on their menu from February 22 to March 9, and you can vote for it here.
