The panini or panino is a variety of sandwich originating from Italy, which has international distribution. In Italy, a panino is usually made with a small roll or a piece of bread, generally a ciabatta or a rosetta. The bread is cut horizontally and filled with salami, ham, cheese, mortadella, and some other foods; it is sometimes served hot after being pressed on a grill. A toasted panino, colloquially called a toast, is made from two vertical slices of cassetta bread almost always filled with prosciutto and some slices of cheese, and cooked on a grill in a sandwich press. In central Italy, there is a popular version of panino that is filled with porchetta, meaning pieces of roasted pork. Traditionally, it is served without any type of sauce or oil. (Source: Wikipedia)
