This time is very specific for Catholic followers; the way of eating daily can vary greatly, and that’s why we give you some tips to avoid getting too tangled up and to follow the tradition. Here we present the gastronomy of Holy Week.
The main rule of Easter is that there should be austerity regarding food. This refers to both preparations and certain ingredients like meat. To make it clearer, here is a list of what can and cannot be consumed during this time of year:
- Meat is the main object of abstinence, covering both red meats (beef, veal, lamb) and white meats (kid, lamb, pork).
- There should also be a fast from dairy products, but this should only be followed on the day of Lent.
- The recommended alternatives are fish and seafood, as these can be consumed without issue during Holy Week and Easter.
- Three dishes that have been used for five centuries to commemorate this time of year are hard-boiled eggs, cod, and bread. All three are consumed throughout Europe by Orthodox families.
- As an interesting fact, the Vatican has stated that while the sacrifice of many Catholics in abstaining from certain gastronomic pleasures is appreciated, it is enough to make some type of sacrifice for others and thus strive to be a better person.
