Have you decided to live alone and don’t know much about cooking? It’s very likely that you miss your mom’s or grandma’s stews. You might sometimes visit your mom under the pretext of seeing her, just to have one of those delicious dishes you love so much. It’s very likely that you’ll resort to eating out, and there will come a time when you realize how much money you’re spending on it. Once you add it all up and realize that your responsibility living alone is to eat properly, not just with the right taste and texture, but also in terms of nutrition and economy. Here are some tips for you to start learning and organizing your kitchen right away. - First of all, with help from your mom, mother-in-law, or friends, choose the dishes that you think are not too complicated to make. - Buy a special notebook or folder and write down all the ingredients and step-by-step instructions. - Plan the menu for a whole week, something different but simple each day; it will also help you make your shopping list, and you’ll save money by buying only what you need. - Your list should include basic products such as pasta, flour, sugar, salt, tuna, etc. - Keep some pre-cooked foods in the freezer that can be combined with other ingredients to create delicious dishes, saving you time and effort; some options can be: vegetables, empanadas, tacos, chicken, etc. - Preferably, organize and choose one or two days to cook for the whole week. You can freeze the stews and label each one, and remember to defrost them in time. - Read each recipe carefully and follow it to the letter. - Buy, if necessary, a clip or a special stand to hold the recipe so you can see it without neglecting your dish or getting your notes dirty. - Take out the ingredients and utensils you will need from the pantry to prepare your recipe and keep them handy. - Learn to make first those foods that you can combine with anything like chicken, meat, or vegetables: tomato sauce, dressings, etc. - If the recipe you are going to prepare requires chopping, grinding, mashing, or beating some ingredients, you can do this at the beginning and place them in small plates or containers to have them ready when you need to use them. - Make sure to include one or two cloths in your pantry list to clean yourself while cooking and a small trash can. - When you’re cooking, place the pots and pans you are using in the sink and wash them as you go, so you won't have everything piled up.
