It is known that when the cold season arrives in Mexico, we all look for any excuse to enjoy a good hot drink and a sweet bread for cravings or dinner. However, preparing the perfect drink will depend on the quality of the ingredients, so today we will tell you which are the best and worst evaluated table chocolates by Profeco, you will be surprised! The table chocolate is sold in every corner of the country, as it is a staple to beat the cold, to dip some crispy churros, and to accompany the traditional Rosca de Reyes. As Mexicans are always in search of the best chocolate to drink, Profeco took on the task of analyzing the brands present in the market at the beginning of 2022, to determine which was the highest quality tablet, take note! You can also read: Benefits of cocoa for hypertensionProfeco: What are the best and worst chocolates? After conducting a quality study of 32 table chocolates in tablet or powder form, the National Consumer Protection Laboratory detected that some do not comply with the net content they declare, others contain sweeteners, not recommended for children, or have labels such as reduced sugar and contains vitamins and minerals. The best-rated chocolate was Moctezuma Uruapan Premium/Dark table chocolate/250 g, based on the characteristics of this type of chocolate, stands out among others for containing more cocoa and less sugar. Some of the table chocolates that were not rated very well are the following: KEKUA, table chocolate with sugar 400 g: Does not display its nutritional declaration per 100 ml of prepared product, therefore it does not comply with NOM-051-SCFI/SSA1-2010. VITAMIN CHOCO GENIUS Chocolate powder fortified with vitamins and minerals/385 g: Does not declare trans fat or added sugars per 100 ml of prepared product nor energy content per package, thus failing to comply with NOM-051-SCFI/SSA1-2010. It also contains sweeteners and does not present the warning label CONTAINS SWEETENERS, NOT RECOMMENDED FOR CHILDREN. GOLDEN HILLS Table chocolate 540 g: Adds coconut or palm fat, which is not among the permitted types of fat, even though NOM-186-SSA1/SCFI-2013 allows the addition of 5% of vegetable fat other than cocoa (only allows six types of vegetable fats). Those containing less productProfeco also pointed out which chocolates do not comply with the regulations regarding net content: MOCTEZUMA CASERO Table chocolate/270 g: Had up to 6.5% less net content than declared. ABUELITA Original Nestlé Table chocolate/270 g: Had up to 6.0% less net content than declared. La Suiza Table chocolate/360 g: Had up to 4.2% less net content than declared. Precíssimo Chocolate flavor table chocolate/200 g: Had up to 11.4% less net content than declared. DON GUSTAVO Granulated powdered chocolate 25% less sugar than traditional granulated chocolate/250 g: Had up to 12.8% less net content than declared. The not-so-healthy ones If you are trying to take care of your health, pay close attention, as the following table chocolates did not warn that they contained an excess of calories: ABUELITA original Nestlé Table chocolate/270 g. DON GUSTAVO Table chocolate/540 g. IBARRA Traditional Mexican table chocolate/270 g. ABUELITA Granulated Nestlé powdered chocolate/360 g. Coco Tavo Powdered chocolate fortified with vitamins and minerals/350 g. DON GUSTAVO Granulated powdered chocolate/350 g. DON GUSTAVO Granulated powdered chocolate 25% less sugar than traditional granulated chocolate/250 g. IBARRA Daily Care Powdered chocolate fortified with iron and vitamins, partially sweetened with stevia/327 g. VITAMIN CHOCO GENIUS Powdered chocolate fortified with vitamins and minerals/385 g. Choco Choco IBARRA/Powder to prepare a chocolate-flavored drink/327 g. Morelia Presidencial Powdered food for preparing chocolate-flavored drink/357 g. Nesquik Opti-Start Nestlé Powdered food for preparing chocolate-flavored drink/357 g. You can also read: The incredible benefits of drinking hot chocolateBefore buying table chocolate If you are going to buy chocolate this season, remember the information published by Profeco and compare it with the products in the store, as after the observations made by the governing body, it is very likely that the brands have made changes to their products.  Additionally, Profeco also made a series of recommendations when buying this basic ingredient in the Mexican kitchen, take note! Check the label and nutritional information. If you suffer from diabetes, you should consider that table chocolates often contain sugar and provide quite a few calories.  Consume these types of products in moderation. Remember that products containing certain sweeteners are not recommended for children. Do not add more sugar. Put the chocolate in an airtight container and store it in the pantry, away from heat.
