We are less than a month away from one of the most celebrated and folkloric days of the Mexican calendar. The Day of the Dead arrives with many colors, traditions, and offerings, and one of the most common is to break the bread of the dead with family, accompanied by a rich hot chocolate. Today we bring you different versions of this delicious sweet bread so you can choose your favorite.
Traditional bread of the dead
Fluffy, sugary, and with a golden crust, this is the bread of the dead that you know and love. The recipe takes a couple of hours to complete as it takes time and care to achieve that texture of the bread of the dead that you want to give to your family, but the good thing is that you can make it in advance and simply take it out on November 2nd. Remember that this recipe also applies to other types of sweet bread for the rest of the year.
Orange bread of the dead
If you like the traditional recipe but are looking to change things up a bit this year, we highly recommend this new preparation. It is very different from the ones you've seen out there as it includes a cream cheese frosting and is even decorated with sugar skulls. It may not be the traditional way, but we assure you that you will turn heads with this so different bread of the dead.
Yolk bread of the dead
This is a more rustic version of the bread of the dead. It could even resemble village bread for breakfast as it is not as sugary and has a much crunchier and bronzed appearance. For a healthier and less sweet dessert for November 2nd, this is an alternative we highly recommend, and you can even decorate it with small drawings as shown in the recipe.
Oaxacan bread of the dead
The Oaxacan bread of the dead, like the yolk bread, is more rustic; in fact, it is no longer dusted with sugar but replaced with sesame, which gives it a very different flavor. Although it is still a sweet bread, it has a slightly saltier taste and is more complex when mixed with hot chocolate or a delicious pot coffee that pairs very well.
Bread of the dead
And we conclude with another typical recipe, the classic sugary bread that we all love. This recipe differs from the first one we offered because it is quite a bit more complex, using almost double the ingredients and taking nearly three hours to be ready. If that recipe was more express, let’s say this is a more complex and laborious bread, but if you have the time, the result is completely delicious—a bread worthy of your family, so fluffy inside that you won't believe it.
