We celebrate love with dinners, candles, lingerie, and high-voltage encounters. But... what is the origin of this celebration? Why is it on February 14th? We tell you why today is the day for those who lose their heads for love. February 14th is a date to remember your loved one, to give chocolates, hearts, and flowers… While making single people envious who have no one to celebrate this Day of Lovers, also known as Valentine's Day. Where does this story come from? In ancient Rome, around 15 gods were worshipped, and Christians were persecuted. However, there were priests very determined to have people marry under the Christian ritual. Valentine was one of those who dedicated himself to marrying couples even when the emperor had prohibited it. The Roman leader believed that married soldiers were not as good and efficient as single ones… Because married ones wanted to return home, while the others did not have that urgency. Additionally, in ancient Rome, February 15th was celebrated as the day of fertility or Lupercalia (in honor of the god Lupercus), and more people wanted to get married on that date. The emperor learned that Valentine was conducting clandestine marriages and ordered him to be arrested. It was at that moment that the priest tried to convert him to Christianity. Although initially, Claudius II was attracted to that religion that the Romans themselves were persecuting, the soldiers and the Governor of Rome forced him to give up and organized a campaign against Valentine. The Roman emperor changed his mind and ordered the governor of Rome to prosecute the priest. This act was carried out by Asterius, his lieutenant. When he was before Valentine, he mocked the Christian religion and wanted to test him: he asked if he would be able to restore the sight of one of his daughters who was blind by birth. The priest accepted and, in the name of the Lord, performed the miracle, converting the girl to Christianity. But there was a problem… Valentine fell in love with the girl. On the eve of his execution, he sent a farewell note signed with the words from your Valentine, hence the origin of love letters and poems exchanged by lovers on this date. Lieutenant Asterius and his entire family converted to Christianity but could not free Valentine from his execution. Saint Valentine was beheaded on February 14th, 270 AD… The day for those who lose their heads for love!
