You use sunscreen, apply anti-aging creams, and visit the dentist every six months. But have you ever worried about the internal care of your skin and teeth? Our friends from ActitudFEM share with us the list of 10 foods that are bad for your skin.
The foods we consume play a very important role in our appearance, and if we want to look young and radiant, and have a beautiful smile, it's best to avoid the food on this list:
1. Salt
According to the American Heart Association, more than 1500 mg of sodium can cause high blood pressure, which also weakens the skin by affecting collagen. If you love salt, prepare to have little wrinkles around your eyes, bags, and dark circles.
2. Sugar
Dermatologists claim that sugar affects blood vessels and accelerates the aging process. They even state that if you cut out sugar for a week, by the seventh day you will notice clearer and more vibrant skin.
3. Coffee
Besides waking you up every morning, coffee contains a double dose of aging elements. It not only stains your teeth but also dehydrates your body, causing your skin to look dry and less youthful.
4. Alcohol
Alcohol pulls water out of your cells, causing bags under your eyes. Another reason to stay away from alcohol is that we often pair it with salty snacks (see point 1).
5. Red meat
According to a study from Cleveland Clinic’s Wellness Institute, eating red meat more than once a week is linked to wrinkles and serious heart problems. High levels of carnitine (a compound abundant in animal proteins) are said to harden blood vessel walls, causing those horrible skin folds to appear prematurely.
6. Carbohydrates
Foods like white bread and pasta have a high glycemic index, which inflames the skin. They also break down collagen, which keeps skin strong, and elastin, which makes your skin more flexible.
7. Spicy food
Chili is great for your metabolism, but very bad for the skin of some people, especially if you have rosacea or are going through menopause. This is because spicy food dilates blood vessels.
8. Processed meats
The preservatives in these types of meats are famous for their pro-inflammatory properties, making the skin look swollen and red.
9. Soda
Those delicious sugary drinks are not good for your skin and teeth at all. Soda is highly acidic and wears down tooth enamel, making them more susceptible to cavities. Additionally, if you enjoy a soda a day, you are likely to look larger than you really are, thanks to the high sodium levels it contains.
10. Trans fats
These manufactured fats found in fast food not only take away your waistline but also steal the elasticity from your skin and clog your arteries.
