How to Plant an Avocado

Avocados are one of the most nutritious and delicious fruits. Place three toothpicks on each side of the pit and one on the top. This will prevent the pit from sinking. Place the pit in a glass or jar of water, you can use one with a wide mouth. Just make sure to submerge the wider part of the pit in water. It’s best to use a glass jar so you can check when the roots start to sprout.  Put the glass or jar in a warm, bright place. Remember that it should not be exposed directly to sunlight. Change the water every five days to prevent mold and fungus from growing. The roots should sprout from the pit within two to six weeks after placing it in the water. (If after eight weeks you still see no progress, check your process and start with another pit). Check the water level constantly, so you can ensure that the pit is always submerged about 2 cm or a little more than ¾ inch.  When the stems that sprout from the avocado pit reach 15 cm, you should cut them.  Once the roots are stronger, and the sprout has grown and has leaves, transfer the plant to a pot. Half of the pit should remain above the soil.  How should you care for your avocado plant?  The plant should be in a warm, sunny place. Water the plant two to three times a week.  It’s best to transfer the plant to a larger pot between March and June. When planting an avocado from a pit, it takes longer for the tree to bear fruit. It is estimated that an avocado plant that was born from a pit can bear fruit between five and 13 years after being planted.
