Printing your food is now a reality

Since 2013, NASA has been experimenting with creating food by printing it with a 3D printer. This is a useful resource for astronauts who need to ration their food while traveling in space. Now, this technology is advancing by leaps and bounds and is starting to reach the masses, where it can truly make a difference. Specifically, there is a restaurant in Los Angeles that has already embraced 3D printing and made it part of its menu. 3DS Culinary Lab is the new trendy offering in the Californian city. The chefs at the restaurant use a printer called ChefJet that utilizes different types of sugar to create food and print it in various shapes. Now, this place is not just a mere restaurant; it is a laboratory, an experimental space. Here, some of the world's most famous chefs gather, along with engineers, chemists, and other curious minds who treat the restaurant like a playground. Alongside these figures, luminaries such as Matthew Biancaniello and Top Chef season 12 winner Mei Lin have set up shop at 3DS Culinary Lab to create a very interesting beverage and culinary offering. Nowadays, one of these printers costs around $1,000, so while it’s not cheap, it is starting to be within reach for many home cooks. It seems to be only a matter of time before we all start cooking with 3D printers in our homes. However, it appears that the most significant impact of this new technology will fall within the humanitarian social sector, as tests are already being conducted for large-scale food production to meet the needs of low-income communities in Africa. Once this is achieved and expanded, what may now seem like a game for mad scientists could become the answer to world hunger.
