The cleaning of teeth with natural ingredients has been recorded since ancient times, when people used the ashes of burnt oxen hooves or eggshells as toothpaste. This combination was primarily aimed at removing accumulated debris from the surface of the teeth and it is believed that water was added to form a paste before use. Today, the offerings for dental health are very varied, but there are also natural and homemade options to clean and even whiten teeth that fortunately do not involve animal hooves. There are some natural substitutes that can be used to make homemade toothpastes, which not only provide oral health benefits alongside conventional toothpaste but also have no side effects. Below are some of them: Coconut oil Coconut oil has natural antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antifungal properties, combats fungal infections caused by Candida albicans, and also protects teeth against cavities. It can be used as a base for homemade toothpaste or as a mouthwash. Baking soda The alkaline nature of baking soda neutralizes the pH of the oral cavity. Additionally, this chemical also has mild abrasive properties to remove stains from teeth. Sea salt The alkaline property of sea salt makes it a good ingredient in a natural toothpaste. If you want to try these natural ingredients, you can make simple homemade toothpastes as follows: Toothpaste with baking soda and water. Mix one teaspoon of baking soda with a few drops of water and a drop of essential oil, if desired. As a home remedy to whiten teeth, you can also try lemon, orange, or banana peels; just gently rub the fruit peels on your teeth for about 2 minutes and rinse your mouth well and brush your teeth afterwards.
