Without realizing it, we waste a terrible amount of water every day. Many don't know that if you leave the water running while brushing your teeth, you are wasting about 10 liters of water per minute, which is much more than many Mexicans have in a month. Awareness about water conservation will not only lead us to have a better planet but also to support those who do not have the privilege of a tap or a shower. To encourage you to join the movement, we recommend ten simple tips to save water at home.
Save Cold Water
When showering, there is a waiting time until the hot water arrives. Keep a bucket handy to collect the cold water; you can use it for the toilet, the sink, or to water plants.
Turn Off the Shower
At least for the minutes it takes you to lather up and apply shampoo, turn off the shower. You will save more than 30 liters of water by doing so.
When Brushing Your Teeth
Brushing your teeth with the tap running means losing 5 to 15 liters per minute. It's better to use a cup to rinse, and then rinse the toothbrush and the cup.
Maximize Your Appliances
Make the most of your washing machine and dishwasher by avoiding incomplete loads. You will save water and energy by simply waiting to fill the appliance.
When Washing Dishes
If you wash dishes by hand, don’t do it with the tap running. If we get into the habit of collecting water in the sink and washing with that accumulated water, we can save up to 60 liters of water with each dishwashing.
Give Yourself Time to Thaw
Do not thaw meat or chicken under the tap as that can waste up to 15 liters of water. Instead, thaw in advance by placing your ingredient in the regular refrigerator the night before.
Choose Appropriate Hours
If you are going to water the garden, try to do it at night or in the morning, never at noon, as water evaporation is higher at that time, and you'll have to water more, thus wasting more water.
Recycle
When washing your fruits and vegetables, do it in a container or bowl; this way, when you finish, you will have a good amount of water to water your plants.
Bucket, Not Hose
One of the biggest ways to waste water is washing the car with a hose. The ideal is to fill one or two buckets of water, which is more than enough to give your car a good wash.
Every Drop Counts
A drop per second equals 30 liters a day. With this in mind, every morning check the faucets and taps in your home, both in the kitchen and in the bathrooms. Finding that small leak translates to saving thousands of liters of water each year.
