Add ice to the shaker and let it sit for a few seconds.
Add the dry vermouth and stir with the stirring spoon to perfume the ice.
Place the strainer and discard the excess vermouth; if you prefer a drier drink, skip this last step.
Discard the ice from the martini glass.
Pour the gin or vodka into the shaker and mix again with the stirring spoon for 15 seconds; cover it with the strainer and pour the cocktail through the fine strainer into the glass.
