Limoncello

This Italian liqueur from the Amalfi Coast is delicious served alone with ice. It can also be served as a martini, mixed with sparkling wine. It takes two weeks to develop its delicious lemon flavor in the vodka.

  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 3 cups water
  • 4 cups vodka
  • 1/2 cups lime zest, (like 7 yellow lemons)

  • Mix the vodka and lemon zest in a container. Cover and let sit at room temperature for 2 weeks.
  • Strain the vodka mixture through a sieve and discard the lemon zest.
  • Combine 3 cups of water and sugar in a large saucepan. Cook over medium heat until the sugar dissolves, stirring occasionally.
  • Remove from heat and let it cool until it is at room temperature. Add the vodka to the mixture.
  • Divide the limoncello into 3 (sterilized) 750 ml bottles and seal tightly.
  • Serve it in a glass with ice or in a martini glass mixed with sparkling wine.
