Grandma Inés' Breads

  • 300 milliliters whole milk, at room temperature
  • 30 grams dry yeast
  • 60 grams sugar
  • 1 kilo wheat flour
  • 5 eggs
  • 125 grams butter, at room temperature
  • 1 tablespoon salt

  • Preheat the oven to 180ºC (360ºF).
  • In a deep bowl, mix the milk with the yeast and sugar. Add the sifted flour, 4 eggs, the butter, and finally the salt.
  • Mix well and knead on a firm surface for at least 10 minutes until you obtain a very soft and elastic dough. Let this dough rest in a deep bowl, covered with a damp cloth in a warm place, away from drafts. The dough should double its initial volume (approximately 45 minutes, depending on humidity and temperature).
  • Once the dough has risen as indicated, transfer it back to the surface and form small balls in the palm of your hand. Let the balls rest, uncovered on a baking tray, until they double in size again.
  • In a bowl, lightly beat the remaining egg and brush each ball of dough. If you like, sprinkle a little sesame seeds. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes until golden brown.
  • Remove, let cool and serve.
