Vegan Dead Bread

The bread of the dead is a tradition in Mexico, where it is prepared to decorate the offerings of the day of the dead, but also to enjoy with the family. On this occasion, we recommend you try this version of vegan pan de muerto, which is ideal for those who follow a plant-based diet or for anyone looking for a delicious alternative.

  • Transfer the bread of the dead dough to a bowl and cover with plastic film. Let ferment in a warm place for approximately 30 minutes.
  • After this time, punch the dough and divide it into 80 g pieces. Reserve a little of the dough to form the bones.
  • Form balls with the pieces you cut and cover them with a damp cloth.
  • While the balls rest, form the bones. For this, add a little flour to the dough that you reserved and form the bones and heads of the bread of the dead. Place them on the balls, press the center part with the palm of your hand, cover again and let them rest to ferment for 10 minutes.
  • Varnish the bread with the mixture of water, sugar, salt and essence of orange blossom. Bake the vegan pan de muerto at 180 °C for 25 minutes.
  • Once the pan de muerto is ready, remove from the oven. While it is still hot, brush with butter, sprinkle with sugar and decorate with cempasuchil flower petals.
